The past is the present for future generations who do not know their history

Oh how I am loving all this…

family and history of the Shoals! A cousin in Campobello, South Carolina shared this photo with me. His name is Greg Vandiver. He descends from John Henry Vandiver, who is his grandfather. His great-grandfather’s name is Thomas Jasper Vandiver. John Henry Vandiver lived in the LaGrange community in Colbert County, Alabama. Greg’s father is Edward Keith (Punk) Vandiver and Punk was one of 12 children by John Henry Vandiver and Virginia Sue McCluskey.

It is through Greg’s father that we are able to enjoy this absolutely stunning historical photo.

  1. WILSON’S HEADQUARTERS AND CAMP (Winter 1865)
Major General James Harrison Wilson, U S Army, assembled the largest cavalry force ever amassed in the Western Hemisphere at this site from mid-January to March 22, 1865.
Wilson’s headquarters was at the Houston Plantation about 200 yards south of here. Five divisions totaling 22,000 men were camped from Gravely Springs to Waterloo.

After intensive training Wilson’s Cavalry crossed the river on March 22, 1865, to invade South Alabama and Georgia. This operation included the burning of the University of Alabama and the capture of President Jefferson Davis at Irwinville, Georgia on May 10, 1865.

What a wonderful picture! Annie “Boots” McCluskey was my grandmother (DOD 1986). I have never seen this picture nor do I have any idea why she was called Boots, but would love to find out … I know next to nothing about this part of my family so seeing this – my great grandparents and great-great grandmother! – is exciting. Thank you, Mr. Vandiver (we’re cousins!) and thanks also to the ladies who put this blog together.
